LOS ANGELES, CA—In an unexpected twist on the typical immigrant success story, 34-year-old Kevin Wong blames his lack of professional achievement on his parents’ relentless support and affection.

“While my friends were being pushed into becoming doctors and engineers, my parents were too busy telling me to ‘follow my dreams’ and ‘be happy,'” Kevin lamented. “How could I possibly thrive in such a nurturing environment?”
