The Anderson family of San Francisco reportedly mistook California Governor Gavin Newsom for a plastic container and deposited him in their blue recycling bin late Monday evening.

According to sources close to the family, the mix-up occurred when Mr. Newsom, who was visiting the neighborhood in search of violators of his new anti-humor law, was spotted standing on the curb near the family’s recycling bins, appearing “rigid and suspiciously shiny” in his usual tailored suit.

“We thought it was a new type of compostable Tupperware,” said Marcia Anderson, the family matriarch. “You know, the kind Whole Foods is always pushing. He was just standing there so still and un-life-like, I figured it was eco-friendly plastic.”

Marcia’s husband, Gary, elaborated further. “He had that sleek look about him. Clean-cut, smooth exterior – I mean, the man *screams* BPA-free. I thought we were doing the right thing for the environment.”

It wasn’t until after curbside pickup that the Andersons realized their error when a city worker discovered Newsom attempting to give an impromptu speech from inside the recycling truck, insisting that he was “ready to reduce, reuse, and lead.”

Governor Newsom was unharmed in the incident and later released a statement reminding Californians that while recycling is critical, it’s important to “double-check” before sorting, as “human politicians do not belong in the recycling stream, no matter how polished their surface might seem.”

The governor added that he was “flattered” by the family’s assumption, calling it “the ultimate sign of progress in our battle against single-use plastics.”

The Andersons, meanwhile, have vowed to attend a city-organized recycling seminar and have since labeled all actual plastic containers to avoid future political confusions.
