Clooney and Pitt Return in ‘Oceans 14: Los Angeles’ Where they just… walk in and take stuff
In an unexpected twist to the heist genre, George Clooney and Brad Pitt are back in “Ocean’s 14: Los Angeles,” but this time, there’s no need for the intricate plans, the high-tech gadgets, or even Danny Ocean’s charm. Set in the sunny, laissez-faire landscape of Los Angeles, California, the crew discovers that the art of the steal has become as simple as walking into a store and, well, just taking stuff.
The film opens with Danny Ocean (Clooney) reading a newspaper with a headline screaming, “California’s New Shoplifting Policy: If It’s Under $950, It’s Yours!” His eyebrows arch in that classic Clooney way, signaling the birth of the easiest heist plan ever conceived.
Rusty Ryan (Pitt), looking as bewildered as he is amused, quips, “So, we’re just… shopping now?”
The crew, including a crafty Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon) who’s now ironically out of a job since hacking security systems is passé, gathers in a chic LA loft. Their mission briefing is hilariously brief:
“Alright, team,” Danny begins, barely containing his smirk, “our target is everything. The plan? Walk in, look like you’re pondering the ethics of consumerism, and walk out with whatever you can carry.”
The montage that follows could be mistaken for a bizarre episode of “Supermarket Sweep.” The gang, dressed in their usual sharp suits, casually stroll through electronics stores, luxury boutiques, and even a high-end grocery store, where Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) debates over organic avocados like it’s the score of a lifetime.
Critics are calling it “The Comedy Heist of the Century,” where the only tension is whether they’ll remember to use reusable bags to avoid the extra charge.
In one particularly satirical scene, a new character, played by a cameo of a famous lawmaker, hands out flyers on “How to Heist Responsibly,” reminding thieves to “please keep it under $950 to avoid paperwork.”
The climax isn’t a thrilling escape or a clever twist but a group photo in front of a store with their ‘purchases,’ hashtagged #LAHeist on social media, which ironically goes viral, making them anti-heroes in a city that celebrates notoriety.
“Ocean’s 14” wraps up with the crew donating their haul to The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good, not out of guilt, but because, as Rusty puts it, “Even stealing gets boring when it’s legal.”
The film ends with the gang contemplating their next move. “Maybe we’ll try Wall Street next,” Danny muses, as the screen fades to black, leaving audiences laughing and perhaps pondering the absurdity of real-world policies. Critics argue over whether the film is a brilliant commentary on current laws or just Clooney and Pitt having a laugh at California’s expense. Either way, it’s a box office hit, proving once again that in Hollywood, as in heisting, timing is everything.
