Protestors in Aurora, Colorado, stormed an ICE holding facility on Friday night and replaced the American flag with a Mexican flag. Onlookers cheered as the American flag was thrown to the ground and the Mexican flag flew over the facility. Over the next few hours, confused illegal immigrants being held at the facility began requesting transfer to an ICE facility that was “being run by the United States, not Mexico.” Guards at the facility tried to reassure detainees that this was just an outside protest and that in fact they were still in the custody of the United States, not Mexico.

“There was a panic spreading throughout the facility,” said an anonymous guard who was leaving the facility after his shift ended. “They were terrified that maybe the facility was now going to be run by the Mexican government. These people had risked their lives to get out of Mexico, and now they were scared they would be in Mexico again.”

Eventually, calm returned to the facility when one of the guards had the wise idea of showing a live video stream of the crowd outside the facilities to the detainees. Once they saw that mostly white people were standing outside and cheering the Mexican flag, they understood that it was just “loco gringos” and nothing to worry about.
